CertainTeed Sponsors Builders’ Competition to Benefit Habitat for Humanity

CertainTeed Corporation, North America’s leading brand of sustainable building products, is proud to sponsor the 4th Annual Builders’ Competition at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Oaks, Pa., to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

The two-day competition drew teams of building professionals from across the region, in a contest to see which team can frame out a standard Habitat for Humanity home in the least amount of time. This year, nine teams composed of 10-12 framers competed for the coveted Devon Builders’ Cup, a symbol of outstanding service.

“This competition allows these contractors to showcase their skills in service to a great cause,” said John McClintick, the event organizer. “Unlike other competitions this one appeals to human nature, being of service to others, with the fruits of their labor being nine framing packages that will benefit Habitat for Humanity families in Delaware and Pennsylvania.”

This is CertainTeed’s second year sponsoring this event.  “We have a long history with Habitat for Humanity throughout the United States and it is especially pleasing to support an event which benefits Habitat for Humanity efforts in our own backyard,” said Peter Dachowski, CertainTeed president and CEO. “We also hope this is an opportunity to get our employees more involved with local Habitat affiliates in building out some of these nine homes.”

Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Delaware County, Pa., Camden, N.J. and New Castle County, Del., will receive the framing packages produced from the competition. The homes are 1,200 square feet and this year several will be finished as twin homes. The build-out will take place later in the year.

The teams come from both the greater Philadelphia area and the Lancaster areas. Many of these teams also participate as Habitat for Humanity build-out teams. “It’s amazing, in this economy, to see this level of involvement,” said McClintick. “But this competition produces something that gives back to the community.”

Since its inception, the Builders’ Competition has participated in the construction of 15 homes, eight of which were sent to Habitat for Humanity Baton Rouge on the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast. For more information, visit www.builderscompetition.org
